ARTICLE 16 - Using Reiki to help animals get along

Over the years, I’ve developed a deep appreciation for Reiki healing—both its versatility and the many different ways it can be used.

Many of those ways you simply have to discover for yourself. Only through time, practice, and a willingness to experiment can you begin to truly appreciate the limitlessness of Reiki.

Reiki, like many skills, begins with attunement to the energy. But that’s only the start of the journey. From there your learning curve expands as you gain experience.

FROM SWORN ENEMIES TO GOOD FRIENDS

One day, I discovered just how powerful Reiki can be when used between two animals who do not get along. I must confess, I haven’t had another opportunity to try it in quite this way—but the one time I did, between two horses, the results were nothing short of spectacular.

For those less familiar with horses, it’s important to know they’re very much like people: they resonate with some individuals and clash with others. In my fifty years of being around horses, I’ve observed that the initial bond—or lack of it—between two horses usually determines the future of their relationship. When horses take an instant dislike to each other, they rarely change their minds. In fact, I couldn’t recall a single instance where sworn equine enemies became friends.

Until the day I used Reiki.

When we arrived at our new yard in October 2023, my Thoroughbred mare Jazz introduced herself very amiably to the aged gelding in the next door stable.

Unfortunately, he was not impressed. He reacted aggressively from the start, and that set the tone of their relationship from that point forward.

About six months later, I found them swiping quite aggressively at each other over their stable doors. I was genuinely concerned one of them might get hurt.

So I decided to try Reiki—for the first time ever in this kind of situation.

Standing in front of them both, I allowed myself to be a channel for the beautiful Reiki energy. I directed it toward the horses and the space between them, setting a clear intention: that they become peaceful, even loving, neighbours.

After a few minutes, Jazz retreated into her stable and calmly began eating her hay.

For the next few weeks, there was no clear opportunity to observe whether it had made a difference. The gelding was always at the back of his large stable eating when I brought Jazz in for the night. Perhaps that in itself was a quiet sign of peace between them.

Then, three weeks following the Reiki healing, I saw something remarkable.

There they were, standing at the top of their adjoining fields, having a companionable snooze together. I had to double-check—it really was him. Even more surprisingly, he had left his two field companions at the bottom of the hill to be with Jazz.

That night, something even more astonishing happened. Jazz was eating her feed from the manger, and the gelding stood with his nose just inches away, looking in through the bars. Neither of them showed the slightest irritation.

From that moment on, their relationship transformed. Not only did peace reign, but it appeared they had formed a true friendship.

Once again, I was awed by Reiki’s ability to transmute the energy of a situation—quietly, powerfully, and with lasting results.
