Aricle 14 - Using Reiki to clear away negative energy

Until I embarked on my spiritual journey, I was completely oblivious to the fact that we can pick up negative energy—whether from the environment or from those around us.

Once I understood this, I became proficient at recognizing when I’d taken on unwanted energies. Those times when I felt out of sorts, emotional, angry, or frustrated for no apparent reason were always the times I realized: this energy isn’t mine.

Thankfully, I now had the tools to clear myself quickly and easily. And it worked every time.

But it’s not just humans who are affected. Our animals feel it too—and horses, who are especially sensitive to the energy around them, can be deeply impacted.

The story I share in this article wasn’t technically a Reiki healing, but it absolutely involved energy. And to be honest, I often wonder where one ends and the other begins—or if they’re, in fact, one and the same. All I know is that before I was Reiki-attuned, I was never able to move energy in this way.

The common thread always seems to be love. And as love feels like the answer to everything, perhaps it is the unifier behind all the labels we give things.

The Horse Biter

There was a horse on the yard where we kept our two horses who had suddenly started biting everyone who walked past his stable.

It happened out of the blue, with no obvious cause—but it left people annoyed and complaining loudly.

Because the horse’s human visited the yard at different times than I did, I had no chance to ask her permission to offer Reiki. You do need to ask before giving Reiki—both from the horse and their human. I would never impose without that mutual agreement.

So Reiki was off the cards. But there’s no rule against offering beautiful, loving energy. After all, this horse was already absorbing plenty of negative energy from the frustration and fear being directed at him. I thought, “Let’s counterbalance that with something positive.”

Meeting Him With Love

First, I grounded myself and dropped into my heart space. When a horse behaves in a way that’s seen as “bad,” it’s often a reaction to pain, fear, or to energies they’ve picked up. With this horse, it felt very clearly like the latter. I sensed he had absorbed something heavy, and it was causing his distress.

Standing a safe distance from his snapping teeth, I connected with his higher self and reminded him: This is not who you are. His soul is beautiful, perfect, and whole—just as he came into this world.

Then I let divine love and empathy rise in me and gently projected that loving energy toward him.

Something Began to Shift

In between his attempts to bite, I noticed something changing. He began throwing his head, as if trying to shake something off. He yawned deeply, his eyes rolling, his whole body signaling a release. It really looked like he was shedding some stuck energy. After ten minutes, it felt complete for that day.

The next night, I returned and did the same thing. But this time was very different: he didn’t try to bite me—instead, he was trying to lick me. I felt safe enough to let him. He was also licking and chewing, another strong sign that something had shifted internally. His whole energy was softer, more peaceful.

By the third night, he didn’t even come over. He stayed at his haynet, relaxed and unbothered. The message was clear: I’m sorted. No more work needed.”

And the biting? It stopped completely. Not a single attempt to bite from that moment on.

Horses Want to Be Seen

Horses aren’t so different from us. When someone truly sees us—sees our light, our truth, our soul—we want to offer the best of ourselves.

Horses, too, want to be seen for who they truly are. When we witness the wholeness of their soul, rather than the surface behavior, healing becomes possible. Negative energy can be transmuted in the presence of love.

In that loving energy, true alchemy occurs.
